The long arm of Microsoft tries taking down Zeus botnets

    26 Mar

    malware

Microsoft and financial services organizations, with an escort of U.S. Marshals, seized command-and-control servers Friday to take down botnets allegedly used to steal more than $100 million using an estimated 13 million computers infected with the Zeus malware.

After raids in Scranton, Pa., and Lombard, Ill., “some of the worst known Zeus botnets were disrupted by Microsoft and our partners worldwide,” Microsoft announced Sunday night in a post by Richard Domingues Boscovich, senior attorney with Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit.

The defendants allegedly installed the Zeus malware and close relatives called Ice-IX and SpyEye onto victims’ computers, according to a lawsuit filed against the alleged Zeus botnet creators and operators last week. (See below for the full suit.) The botnet operators used the software to show fake or modified Web sites when victims tried to use real banking sites, log their keystrokes to capture victims’ identity information, and then use that information to steal money from victims’ accounts.

To take down the operation, Microsoft also took over Internet traffic that had been used to operate 3,357 botnets, according to the court’s temporary restraining order. (See below for the temporary restraining order, in two parts.)

The seizure was made when the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York blessed the operation after Microsoft and its partners filed a plea to seize the computers and sued 39 as-yet-unnamed defendants who bear nicknames such as Slavik, zebra7753, iceIX, Veggi Roma, susanneon, JabberZeus Crew, and h4x0rdz.

“The United States Marshals and their deputies shall be accompanied by plaintiffs’ attorneys and forensic experts a the foregoing described seizure, to assist with identifying, inventorying, taking possession of, and isolating defendant’s’ computer resources, command and control software, and other software components that are

Supreme Court set for key health overhaul hearing

    26 Mar

WASHINGTON — Amid anticipation akin to a major sports event, the US Supreme Court begins hearing arguments Monday on President Barack Obama’s landmark health reform, a case with huge implications for the nation and 2012 elections.

The nine justices of America’s highest court meet for an unprecedented three days of arguments on different aspects of the constitutionality of the ground-breaking legislation.

The case has been polarizing for the United States: it would provide health insurance to some 32 million Americans lacking coverage, a major social accomplishment for some, but also would force people to buy insurance — an intrusion into civil liberties for others.

The top US court has set aside six hours for oral arguments in the case, the longest in the past 45 years. Hearings typically last only about an hour.

Both supporters and opponents of the Affordable Care Act have been holding demonstrations to make their voices heard.

“It’s health care for everybody. It’s very important,” said Jasper Johnson, a 26-year-old computer technician who came from San Francisco, and was among the handful of people camping out since Friday for the few seats set aside for the public to watch the start of the proceedings on Monday.

“A lot of people don’t get health care. I’m here not only for myself but for the economy as a whole.”

But many Republicans oppose the measure, with frontrunning White House hopeful Mitt Romney calling the law an “unfolding disaster for the American economy.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell described it as “a metaphor for all of the excesses of this administration,” while other conservatives wrote opinion pieces in the nation’s newspapers laying out how the costs of “Obamacare” outweigh the benefits.

    The ruling could have enormous

‘Hunger Games’ opens to estimated $155 million

    26 Mar

Lionsgate hit a bull’s-eye this weekend with “The Hunger Games,” as the story of expert archer Katniss Everdeen and her battle for survival debuted to a record-breaking $155 million at the box office.

The Jennifer Lawrence-starring adaptation of the bestselling book posted the third-highest domestic debut of all time — not accounting for ticket price inflation — behind only the $169.2-million opening for the final “Harry Potter” installment and the $158.4-million launch of “The Dark Knight.” That means “”The Hunger Games’” estimated opening-weekend gross was more than that of any other nonsequel.

As a result of the astronomically high weekend ticket sales, receipts were up 76% compared with the same three-day period last year. The astonishing weekend performance caps a surprisingly strong first quarter at the box office this year, during which movie theater attendance has grown 22% compared with the first three months in 2011.

That’s uplifting news for Hollywood, which was fretting after audience turnout dropped to its lowest level in 16 years in 2011. The turnaround is in part, industry analysts say, because of many distributors’ deciding to release some of their best films in winter — typically seen as a dumping ground for low-grade movies. In addition to a variety of well-reviewed pictures in the marketplace, studios have also been figuring out how to better market their films on social media sites.

    Nomophobia

    24 Mar

Yes, folks, we have a new phobia. Nomophobia is the fear…the anxious feelings one gets when…

Their cell phone or mobile device doesn’t work.

Yes, you heard me right. That feeling you get when you see ‘no signal’ on your cell phone – that gut knot when you can’t be reached (or reach OUT) – it now has a name…

Nomophobia – Short for – No Mobile Phobia

There are very real negative physical symptoms associated with Nomophobia which are commonly feelings of anxiety.

    Causes of Nomophobia

Do you feel nervous when you don’t have signal on your cell phone? Do you get tightly-wound when you’re in a place where you HAVE to turn your cell phone OFF? Can you imagine how you would feel if right this second your cell phone stopped working?

How do you feel when there is only one little bar of battery charge left on your cell phone… and you have no way to charge it?

    Feeling panic?

Guess what? You may be Nomophobic, too.

Eureka 71b Hand Held Vacuum Review

    21 Mar

Vacuuming isn’t the toughest household chore on the agenda for most of us. However, it’s far from the simplest or easiest either.

While the concept of a vacuum certainly takes a lot of the headache out of cleaning your floors and carpets, it certainly does create problems of its own.

To begin with, your typical standard vacuum is unwieldy, clunky, and heavy. It can make thoroughly cleaning your home from top to bottom a bit of a challenge in some cases, especially when it comes to those tight corners, underneath beds, on top of furniture, and inside those hard-to-reach spaces.

Plus, it’s not even possible to use a standard upright model vacuum to clean the inside of your car.

Handheld models can help close some of those cleaning gaps, but not efficiently enough. Most handheld vacuums aren’t powerful enough to really get the job done effectively. Plus, most lack the flexibility offered by the wide variety of attachments and features you get with a standard vacuum.

That’s not the case with this innovative new handheld from Eureka though.

It’s really the best of both worlds.

Let’s take a closer look at why.

    The Perfect Chair

    19 Mar

    Space-Age Technology

The concept of the zero gravity recliner actually came from NASA and the experiences of astronauts who have spent many hours in space. During take-off, astronauts recline with their feet higher than their hearts. This zero gravity position reduces the amount of force exerted on the spine by the extreme speed at which they travel.

In an upright standing or sitting position, gravity places pressure on the spine causing discs to compress and spinal muscles to contract to maintain balance. For a person with back pain, this can be extremely uncomfortable. When gravity is neutralized, muscles rest and discs return to their normal size and shape. This is why you are taller first thing in the morning than you are at the end of the day – because your discs have been relieved of the pressures of gravity and the weight of your body.

Zero gravity recliners are designed to relieve the body of the pressures experienced in an upright position. By extending the lower legs above the heart, the spine is allowed to decompress. This position has several benefits including:

    –Less pressure on the spine

    –Reduced muscle tension

–Less pressure on the heart and expanded lung capacity

–Increased circulation and increased blood oxygen levels

Relax The Back has several zero gravity recliners including fully upholstered recliners in traditional and contemporary designs as well as recliners made for outdoor use. These recliners are designed to follow the natural curves of the spine while providing full lumbar and upper back support. They move easily from full upright position to full recline, making it easy to get in and out. Other features include neck rolls, fully articulated headrests that adjust forward for reading, and built-in massage. Relax The Back has also incorporated the zero gravity

Best Way to Organize Closet Space in Your Home

    19 Mar

The Rubbermaid company traces its roots back to 1939, when the Lee Rowan company was established, and back when they were still selling trouser creasers and hangers. In 1994, the Newell company took over the Lee Rowan company and renamed it Rubbermaid, the name we are too familiar with today.

With innovative designs in hardware devices, kitchen cleaning devices, food storage devices and closet organizers, Rubbermaid has established its own niche in the industry. To date, they have 8 major locations in North America, with a head office at Failawn, Ohio.

These are the advantages in using a Rubbermaid closet organizer:

The Rubbermaid closet organizer is designed for flexibility. These things can fit into closets with sizes that range from 4 up to 8 feet. It is so easy to install that even an average person can do it. You can customize the closet organizer according to your needs with the accessories available. These include the shoe storage racks, telescoping rods,
wire baskets, extra closet shelving as well as tie and belt holders.
